The Frontier - Aquatic Adventure (Phoenix Group)

Filling up the Ship (A catch-up session)
05/30/15 Session

As the title suggests, this was a catch-up session after Will’s birthday. We didn’t get as far as Will’s gift, so that will have to come next time.

At the beginning of the session, the Phoenix was approached by a tiefling (a very rare race in the Frontier) who introduced himself as Cress T McGuiness; a doctor, and his nurse, Julie. As soon as Dorothy could tell them they already has a doctor, a courier dashed up to the Phoenix, bearing the news that Prayton and Joseph McCullen were found dead in town. With this news, Dorothy decided to wake the captain and see what she thought.

Woken up by a knock on the captain’s door, Talael looked and saw she was in bed with the captain, who currently had her in a sort of choking headlock and couldn’t get out. After crying for help, Talael was freed after Captain Aphena woke up. Talael nervously ran out of the room and down to the bottom floor of the ship to hide while Aphena went to address the problems out on the deck.

Aphena asked Cress T why he should be allowed on the ship, and that he had to prove his worth. Cress T, noticing Aphena was a little drunk, quickly shook up a bottle of Alechmist’s Mercy and gave it to Aphena, curing her of her drunken stupor. Yoblin took another dose down to Talael to cure her of her drunken-ness as well. After a short conversation, Aphena agreed to let Cress T onto the crew, not on a trial run, but in the new system she would explain to everyone later.

Shortly afterward, Toren spotted Green Blood coming back to the Phoenix with three other people. Aphena ordered them to line up so we could go through them one by one. Green Blood said he was also recommending himself join the crew, which Aphena accepted. The first person seemed pretty average, said he could do anything, or at least try. He was a human who called himself Jeffery. The second person was a lynxman who looked a little twitchy, but well armed. He introduced himself as Antonio. The last person was a dark-skinned half-elf who said he was a hand-to-hand expert. Green Blood vouched that he had seen this half-elf, who he introduced as Fleece, take down and incapacitate many people fairly quickly and expertly. Aphena accepted them all on as crew members and told Dorothy to round everyone up for a crew meeting in the kitchen.

Dorothy rounded everyone up, but when she got to Talael, she told her there was a crew meeting in the kitchen, then gave her a very intense stare and said she would be watching her. Closely.

When the crew met up in the mess hall, Aphena let everyone know that she was installing a new system, as the trial system didn’t seem to stop people from getting themselves killed and breaking rules. The new system still instated Aphena as captain and Dorothy as first mate. However, the rest of the crew would be divided up into two different ranks; Officers, and Grunts. Grunts were the lowest rank of crew mate and wouldn’t be allowed off the ship unless they were accompanied by an Officer. An Officer would be someone who is considered to be very trusted and hold rank above the grunts. The only Officer who was assigned that day was Yoblin, as he was the only one Aphena trusted enough for the job. Toren was assigned as the new chef, and Cress T was made the doctor. Afterward, Cress T brought up a few make-shift beds for those who had no rooms, as construction of the new rooms would begin the next morning.

Let's Play Modded- wait, what?
05/23/15 Session

“You’re…unnatural.”

“Says the guy who died!” -Toren and Prayton

Upon entering the final chamber, the crew were faced with a well-furnished living quarters. Inside, they found the elf needed for their quest. After spotting him, the group heard a voice from an unknown source go into a rant about “Modded Skyrim” or something of the sort. After meeting up, the elf challenged the party and drew his orange energy sword and golden key sword. The party fought bravely, and ended up defeating the elf. After a few moments, however, everyone’s vision went black, they saw a fighter in the blackness and heard words echo in their head that didn’t seem important or relevant, and found themselves back where they were before the fight!

The second fight started and the elf gave himself more armor, but the end result hadn’t changed. The party still managed to defeat the elf and, unfortunately, go switched reset back again. When the third fight began, the elf looked enraged and gave a bunch of shouts at the start of the fight which made him super-powered, causing a loud crack of thunder and enhancing his physical abilities by insane amounts. Even his magical abilities were enhanced, which was demonstrated as a large burst of ice dropped half the party unconscious. The remaining few standing were somehow able to pull off the victory and drop the elf once more. After the restart (what a surprise!) the elf decided he would simply stop the fight and see what the party wanted again.

Graveknight, who was done with the elf’s games, (ok, that’s funny, I don’t care who you are) demanded the brass box that belongs to Zo. After a moment, the elf realized what box he meant, and after hesitating, finally decided to give it over. When he magically looked it over, the Graveknight detected a large source from various party members, but detected a much larger power source behind them. the Graveknight demanded to know where the elf’s master was, and the elf denied even having a master. Finally, the Graveknight found who the target was (after pushing past Prayton), to everyone’s surprise, it was Red. The Graveknight contacted Zo, who decided he wanted to train Red. After a debate, Red decided it was his destiny to follow the Graveknight and go see Zo. The party gave their goodbyes and Red left with the Graveknight.

The elf asked if he could join alongside the Phoenix crew, but Captain Aphena had already left the room. Toren said it would probably be a swell idea and told him to follow him to see the captain. On the way out, the elf resurrected the other elf (Teldryn), the human fighter and vampire (Lydia and Serana), and the frost troll (Hektre), complementing the party for a job well done.

Outside the cave, a sniper descended from the trees, catching Aphena off guard. The sniper introduced herself as the same sniper the party met during the Casma NaLeille festival. After a re-greeting, Aphena decided she would put both the sniper (Talael) and the elf (Mr. Bobshadovahkiin (A.k.a. Bob)) on trial as new crew members. With the promise that if either mess up, they will pay dearly.

Back in Tohkvor, Green Blood left to go gather up any possible recruits for the Phoenix, while others went to go shopping. Well, some went shopping, others went on their own initiative. After buying a few gauntlets at the armorer, Joseph killed the shop owner and was caught by none other than Prayton. Prayton went through and looted the shop and turned the shopkeeper to ash to erase the evidence. From there, Joseph and Prayton walked down to the local tavern.

After talking about Joseph’s morals, Prayton put him to the test by spontaneously blasting everyone in the tavern and catching the tavern on fire. When guards responded to the scene, they began to arrest Prayton, but Prayton wouldn’t go down without a fight. As Joseph stood up to help the guards, he fired at Prayton, but his gun had trapped gunpowder (a tinkering that was done by Prayton), which triggered all the alchemist’s fire on Joseph’s person, killing him instantly. After that, Prayton was able to hold his own and defeat the five guards, but just barely, with an inch within his life. Prayton found an in-tact gun on Joseph’s body and began to make his escape out the door. However, when he opened the doors, countless guards had bows pointed at him. After a moment of absolute silence, Prayton drew his gun, fired at a few guards before getting finished off by a storm of arrows.

On the Phoenix, Dorothy was sent to get building supplies while Talael and Aphena had a drinking game where they would sit up in the crow’s nest and throw pebbles at Yoblin. After a while, Yoblin got a little too annoyed with their little game and cast a spell on both of them, finishing their drunken stupor with a deep sleep. With Sid’s help, Yoblin took the two from the crow’s nest and put them to bed.

Love is in the Air!
05/02/15 Session

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF-thanks.” -Aphena

As the title suggests, love struck the Phoenix in the last session. Animating a note that was given to him, Toren woke up Captain Aphena to quite the dazzling show. After a soothing voice read a love note to Aphena, she and Toren decided to find out who originally wrote the note.

Leaving no stone unturned, Aphena and Toren asked everyone aboard the ship if they knew anything about the love note. (Seriously. Obe and Graveknight even got asked.) Unfortunately, the two of them couldn’t find a culprit or get anyone to fess up who wrote it. Frustrated, Aphena put the matter aside for the time being and prepared the crew’s journey to find the Elf that Zo sent them after.

Upon landing in Tohkvor, the adventuring party of Aphena, Toren, Yoblin, Graveknight, Joseph, Prayton, and Red, all made their strut through the city. ‘Strut’ being accurate, as streets would clear out as soon as citizens saw a Graveknight roaming the street, rushing away in fear for their lives. On their way out of the city, the group actually found Green Blood, actually out in the open, talking to an old man. Upon locking eyes, the group and Green Blood simply sat and stared at each other. Finally, the crew sent a representative over and found that Green Blood was robbing from the rich and giving to the poor, which drastically turned their perspective of him. He also apologized for what he put the Phoenix through, but explained his justification.

The crew came down to sending Toren in to make a deal. Toren said that if Green Blood were to come along and help them with their current quest and recruit any want-to-be adventurers of the poor district to their cause, they would forgive him and call them even. Green Blood agreed, and followed the crew out to the cave which their quest called them to.

The group fought their way in and through the cave, defeating a Frost Troll, an Elf who carried a green Thession energy sword (quickly picked up by Yoblin), and a double-feature femme fatal of a human fighter and a vampire! The group ended just before the final chamber, where they could feel the immense power flow from.

The Wizard of Zo
04/25/15 Session

“Ok, now seriously, come here.” -Zo to Yoblin

After their arrival in Crosshatch, the Phoenix crew split up into two groups; group one would go into the town and find this powerful wizard in order to fully bring Yoblin back from the dead, and the other group would stay on the ship. Group one consisted of Captain Aphena Gnix, Dorothy Warner, Joseph McCullen, and of course, Yoblin. Group two consisted of Sid Ratliff, Red ‘Sharkbait’ Feranth, Prayton, and the prisoner, Toren Eldary.

After shopping around, the group went to town hall and were given a warning; those who go and investigate the tower to find the wizard never come back. Aphena could not have cared less, so neither did her crew (by her choice, at least). After making their approach on the mysterious tower, the crew entered and found five floors of horrible traps. These traps included animated/screaming/exploding/alarm dolls, arrow traps, fire traps, summoning traps, pitfall traps on each level (making the risk higher on every floor), swinging axe traps, and more.

When they finally reached the top, the crew found themselves with a small room that only one person could fit in. Aphena identified the room was filled with teleportation magic. Each person stepped in the room, one at a time, finding themselves in a bigger room faced with a copper dragon who introduced himself as the great wizard, Zo. Yoblin could identify the dragon had illusion magic and thought it was a bluff. Aphena, testing that theory, ended up getting burned when the dragon spit actual flames back at her for her sass.

When she bargained her only Thessialice crystal shard, the dragon dissapeared and an old man came out of a trap door in the floor, revealing himself as the real Zo. He said he planned on casting True Resurrection on Yoblin, and placed a hand willingly on his head for a moment. In this moment, he said he could kill Yoblin at any point, and made a bigger bargain for casting the spell. He told the party that there’s an elf who lives in a cave between the cities of Tohkvor and Kaivor who borrowed an item from him and never returned it, and now wants the party to bring it back to him. When the party accepted the quest, the wizard cast True Resurrection on Yoblin, and permanently brought him back from the dead. Before the party left, Zo summoned a graveknight guardian to watch over the party (specifically Yoblin) to make sure they stay on-task and complete Zo’s task.

Back at the ship, Toren informed Aphena the contract had been completed and he should be set free. When asked to elaborate, Toren explained that the deal was for Toren to help bring Yoblin back “to the best of his ability”, and given the circumstances he was in (locked in a cell) he did all he could; sit there and give advice. After a long debate, much thinking, and yet another deal made, Toren was released from his cell and given a very, very, cautious place among the crew (on a test run). The session ended as Toren smiled at everyone while he fished, making basically everyone uncomfortable and made them want to not be on the deck anymore. Yoblin returned to his room, lying in bed while being stared down by the graveknight at his bedside. “Sleep well tonight, I shall. A guardian, I have.” After a long pause, the silent graveknight finally spoke, responding with, “Not quite.”

Season Two - Aaaand People are Dead(?)
04/18/15 Session

“I DON’T WANT YOUR SPRINKLES!!” -Aphena to Toren

Between the last session and the start of this session, three months had passed. The Phoenix, after resupplying and upgrading their ship with a dungeon, found a long-dead (but now alive again) Toren Eldary, and immediately threw him in their new prison, which he has been living in for the past few months. Randomly adventuring, the crew also came across Mark, a human who the crew mainly used for their leg-man. After clearing their name in Tohkvor, the Phoenix docked with two missions in mind;
1. Find a doctor to help Obedience “Obe” (Captain Aphena’s pet bird.
2. Find and deal with Green Blood.

Within minutes of exiting the ship, the crew encountered a masked man who only spoke in sign language, but introduced himself as a doctor. He was able to help Aphena with Obe’s breathing problem, which ended up being a small, deep blue Thessialice crystal shard, which Aphena immediately claimed. The crew went back to the ship to have a brief meeting to see if everyone would trust a silent, masked man aboard their crew. To Aphena’s surprise, everyone was okay with it.

Still suspicious, Aphena decided to tail this mysterious doctor and see if he really was just a doctor. He began to go through the poor district and helped heal the sick and homeless. One customer in particular was a goblin in a black cloak, which Aphena had reasonable suspicion could have been Green Blood, but wasn’t for sure…

After tailing, getting detected, then somehow NOT detected in a battle of Nat 20’s, Aphena approached the masked man, who introduced himself as Joseph McCullen, Cleric of Zakon. Shortly after getting his tour of the ship, tragedy struck.

A horse-drawn carriage flew from the docks and smashed into the Phoenix deck, pinning Mark by his waist, rendering him unable to fight back. Surviving the wreck came out a mysterious man, 8’ huge muscles, who took no time at all going straight for Yoblin with vengeance in his eyes. After a brief battle, Yoblin was killed by the mysterious brawler, and after taking roughly 5 or 6 bullet wounds to various places on his body and punching a bird in the face, the mystery man jumped overboard and dove underwater, not to be seen from again. Joseph, quick on his feet and ready with a scroll, cast Temporary Ressurection on Yoblin, bringing him back from the dead for 24 hours (but not as an undead). Regardless, Dorothy did not approve.

After a conversation discussing moving Yoblin’s body to an object so that he wouldn’t die in 24 hours, another mystery man approached the Phoenix, but with a different mindset. A man by the name of Prayton boarded the Phoenix with a proposition; if the Phoenix tests out the new alchemical cannon he designed, he would stay aboard and let the crew use his powerful new invention. Cautious, bust still intrigued, the crew also decided Prayton would join along side as a new member of the Phoenix crew.

When on the topic of resurrection, Prayton had heard of a nearby settlement known as Crosshatch, which he heard was the home to a powerful wizard, who might be able to truly resurrect Yoblin. The crew decided there was no time to lose and set sail for Crosshatch. After some story telling on Dorothy’s part, the ship eventually arrived in Crosshatch, where the crew found a small settlement of wooden shacks, and in the distance, a tall, ominous stone tower. Upon docking, the crew looked toward the tower with curiosity and hope, ready to find out why this wizard was surrounded in so much isolation and mystery.

“https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVoU30ixHrM” -Thession Airship

As the Phoenix crew delved deeper into the mysterious cave they encountered, they found blue-purple crystals. Aphena was able to identify these crystals as Thessialice, a crystal known for absorbing all sources of magic and life around it. When the crew attempted to leave the cave, they were greeted by an airship, armed to the teeth, and were told to hand over all their Thessialice or be destroyed.

While the crew was indecisive on how to proceed, Kitty and Maxamillion hatched a plan of their own. Using rope and grappling arrows, the two were able to climb up and attach themselves to the bottom of the airship. At about this time, it was decided the crew were to give up the crystals they had found so that they wouldn’t receive a laser to the face. Mahkoroh Grogro took all the Thessialice on the ship and headed over to hand the load over to the airship men (who were actually Thessions).

After the crystals were handed over and the Thessions ascended back up into their ship, Maxamillion attempted to climb up onto the ship, only to be met by the Thession airship captain, clad in demon armor. Unsure how to proceed, Max tried twice to grab this foe and pull him off the ship, which ended with getting knocked back off the ship by laser swords, which he cut himself free from Kitty and plummeted into the water below. Afterwards, Kitty went to plan B, blowing up explosive charges she had planted all along the ship’s hull, and also jumping down to avoid the explosion.

Upon being hit with explosives, the Thessions were ready to make an example of who the crew was messing with. Beams of light shot out from the airship’s swivel cannons and targeted the two crewmates on the shore; Mahkoroh and Yoblin. Yoblin was knocked into unconsciousness and Mahkoroh was completely disintegrated with a direct blast. With this, the Phoenix crew made a mad dash for the cave, hoping not to be laser fodder.

Once inside, the crew were met with Thession foot soldiers, who evacuated the players back onto their ship. When brought back to the Phoenix, the crew were fairly pissed off at what had transpired that day, and made some tough decisions. Aphena took Kitty’s weapons and demanded for Maxamillion’s, informing Max he was kicked off the crew. After a moment of contemplation, Maxamillion went along and left back into the cave. Inside, he found the Thession foot soldiers gathering crystals and asked to join their ranks. While the Phoenix drifted off back to the south, they looked back and saw Maxamillion being flown onto the Thession ship.

Onboard the Phoenix, Yoblin decided the traitors shouldn’t live, and personally executed Kitty in her sleep with permission from the captain. He levitated her body and tossed it overboard into the water. Aphena, devastated with all her loses that day, went over to the rule board and added one rule to it; “NO DISOBEDIENCE!”

On the Thession ship, Maxamillion met the captain once again, but this time wishing to join the Thessions ranks. The captain, who introduced himself as Thession Crimson Brigade captain, Damodar, told Maxamillion he was quite exceptional for a human, and brought him down to the brig and had plans to shape him to a great Thession weapon.

Finally, in the vastness of time and space, Death visited an old character, Toren. Informed he was wished back to life by three separate gods, Toren was speechless with his new-found fate. Lokai, god of tricksters wanted Toren as his champion, as did Ahdmor, god of leprechauns. A third god that Death didn’t identify, but knew was more powerful than the first two put together, also wished to see Toren live. With the wave of Death’s skeletal hand, Toren woke up, alive, in the mortal plane on an unfamiliar shore. He scrambled up to his feet with a million thoughts running through his head, ready to live as he did for so long, knowing now the gods were on his side.

Hard as a Rock
03/23/14 Session

“One…two…three…four of our crewmates are stoned!” Will (Yoblin)

Once the crew had determined they weren’t followed by city guards and found a secure, secret cove about an hour north of the city, the Phoenix crew rested their tired heads, finally being free once again. Their current concern was where they had landed; this cove had more secrets than just its location. A cave was near the ship that gave off a strange, blue-violet glow.

The next morning, while the crew readied themselves to tackle the day, Maxamillion Leonidis Glorybringer decided to scout out the area and find some animals to hunt. What he found was the glowing cave, and took a peek inside to see what was there. Upon closer inspection, he found what appeared to be Basilisk footprints. After curiosity drew the rest of the crew to the cave entrance, the party headed inside.

Immediately upon entrance, everyone felt a strange presence wash over them that felt quite foreign to them. Yoblin was able to identify that Soul Potential was being drained from the cave walls, which luckily didn’t affect his spellbook (but did alter his white soul stone).

Through different narrow passages, the party did in-fact find several basilisks in the cave to fight. The numbers kept increasing, which made the challenge all the greater. The basilisks used their hunting tactic of turning their prey into stone, then attempting to devour them while they can’t fight back. Through the course of the session, at one point or another, Yoblin, Maxamillion, Red, and Mahkoroh Grogro were caught in the basilisks evil glare and turned to stone. Despite that, the only casualty of the session (besides the total six basilisks) was Kitty’s pet monkey.

The final shot of the night came when Sid dashed in to save the day with his heavy crossbow; putting the last basilisk down and afterward stating, “I’m getting way too old for this shit.”

Jail Break! Part 2
03/16/15 Session

“If you want me to take your clothes off, give me the badge.” -Maxamillion Leonidas Glorybringer to Yoblin

Today was the second part of the Phoenix’s mission to break out of the Munta NaOdeppo prison in Tohkvor. As the party continued to struggle and survive fending off against the prison guard, a very peculiar encounter happened. On the first floor, Mahkoroh and Aphena were caught by a guard who entered the room with them, but he didn’t arrest them or give them any mind. He simply checked a few lockers and dashed back upstairs. Confused, the two left to go help their friends.

Combat ensued, Kitty’s monkey fell, and one hero rose above the rest to defeat the guards; the mysterious guard Mahkoroh and Aphena met on the first floor. Eventually cornering one guard down, the mysterious (friendly?) guard picked up the body of another guard and decapitated it to intimidate the last remaining enemy. Afraid by the sight, the guard said “M-Max, what the hell are you doing, man??” to which the guard (Max?) replied with silence and an arrow. He missed, but Dorothy finished him off with a bolt to his back.

Mysterious Max, at least as we know him for now, collected up the guard badges from the dead guards and gathered up the people who had broken out that he could get a hold of; Red, Dorothy, Kitty, and Yoblin. He said he’d be willing to help out with the party’s endeavor if they cooperated. Max told Red to go get his friends from downstairs.

Red, doing so, found Mahkoroh and Aphena gazing upon the sight of their compatriot Jorvald completely beaten to death by the rougher prisoners he had let out. After assessing the situation and assuring they too didn’t get beaten up, the crew and prisoners went separate ways. Reuniting, Max removed their prison jumpsuits and the crew re-equipped themselves. Max also gave them the idea of walking out of the prison disguised as guards. Max shoved Yoblin and Kitty’s monkey in a bag and told Aphena’s bird to regroup at their ship.

Upon entering the courtyard, nobody fired any weapons immediately, which was a good sign. When approaching the gate, two gate guards were suspicious about the group of guards, but (somehow) believed Max when he said he was just going into town to sell “goblin parts”. The rest of the party passed through the gate except Mahkoroh, who was asked why he was there. He passed a lie about being the new guard and being the cause for all the trouble. The guard let him through and replied, “My god, newbie. You have one god damn job; keep prisoners in these walls. Can you not do your one f*cking job??” As he finished this statement, the gate closed behind them.

Once rejoined on the ship, the Phoenix crew accepted two new members onto their crew; Kitty Thundersnatch (who finally decided to join on after constant running in with the crew), and Max, otherwise known as Maxamillion Leonidas Glorybringer. The crew narrowly escaped the guard and slipped away just north of Tohkvor in the night. When the ship approached a hide-away cove, the crew were intrigued when the cave they found gave off a deep blue-violet glow…

Jail Break! Part 1
03/02/15 Session

Note: Most of this session was in an initiative order, so time seemed to move quite slowly.

As the crew readied themselves with the new knowledge of how to escape their cells, midnight fell once again over the Munta Na Oddepo. When the mysterious beams of lights came through and shined on the symbols in Mahkoroh and Yoblin’s cells, the two managed to escape and began to look for a way out. Kitty, with her lockpick she managed to get hold of, easily broke out of her cell at midnight as well.

Mahkoroh began to look for his captain, and by the time he did, was attacked by guards. Using his deadly fists, was able to fend off for a while. As a guard went to go help take down the wild half-orc, Aphena grabbed the guard through the bars of her cell and slammed him into the door, managing to grab the keys off his person in the process. Mahkoroh, not long before being knocked unconscious, was able to slip Aphena a scimitar through the bars he took from a guard. Aphena, now armed, stabbed the remaining guards outside her cell before they ran off to reinforce another problem arising somewhere else in the prison, leaving her to begin trying to unlock her cell door with 17 identical keys.

While Yoblin and Kitty snuck around on separate levels of the prison, Yoblin managed to run around and get the guards pissed off before running into a dead end. Much to his surprise, Red (armed with Jorvald’s gear) and Dorothy (decked in Aphena’s gear) busted through the door and shot at the guards before running away with Yoblin to look for the others.

Aphena eventually managed to open her cell and went to loot guards to find any potions. When she found one, she gave it to Mahkoroh, who woke up once again. Mahkoroh gave the keyring to Jorvald, who was in the cell across from Aphena. He instructed him to start getting people out, which he agreed and began trying to break himself out while Aphena and Mahkoroh fled to go find others.

Meanwhile, on her own, Kitty managed to find Mahkoroh’s gear and started looking for useful items she could use besides the shiv she had. She began traveling to different floors and going through the lockers to see what she could find. She managed to make mental contact with her monkey familiar, and found both him and Aphena’s bird in the 4th floor offices. She broke both of them out just before guards, Yoblin, Dorothy, and Red busted in.

The session ended with most of the group together and guards ready to start changing tactics…
